Course Description

CBCT® (Cognitively Based Compassion Training) is an 8-week personal education course designed to cultivate greater well-being through the use of reflective, contemplative practices. Developed by Geshe Lobsang Tenzin Negi, Ph.D at Emory University in 2004, CBCT® is based on centuries-old techniques from the Indo-Tibetan tradition. Negi drew from the lojong tradition, a set of meditative practices designed to bring about 'thought transformation', to create this contemporary and secular method. CBCT® is independent from, and in many ways, supportive of, any faith or belief system.

Analytical mental exercises are used to progressively foster compassion toward increasingly wider circles, beyond those whom we feel immediately closest to. The practices support the growth of a number of mental states and behaviors valued across cultures, such as kindness, gratitude, generosity, and warm-heartedness.

The fundamental premise is that compassion is a trait that can be developed and expanded. This view is supported by contemporary science as well as by most spiritual traditions.

Attendance at all 8 sessions is required, as each session builds on the practice throughout the program. Please plan to commit to all 8 sessions when you apply. This program will take place online via the Zoom platform.

Donations Requested
Our January 2023 CBCT course is being offered in loving memory of our friend and colleague, fellow CBCT Senior Teacher, Samuel Fernandez-Carriba. Please help us to honor his life and efforts sharing compassion practices widely, that we may create a world in which all are liberated, by offering a donation in exchange for this course directly to one of the groups described and linked below. As a suggested guideline, full CBCT registration is $395, however, all contributions at any amount are gratefully welcomed as a gesture both of your appreciation of the time, energy and sharing of these practices and in honor of Samuel and all of our LGBTQ+ relatives.

University of Arizona LGBTQ Affairs - The Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning (LGBTQ) Affairs works to build, sustain, and strengthen a safe, inclusive, and open environment for students, faculty, staff, appointed professionals, alumni, parents, and guests of all gender and sexual identities. The LGBTQ+2S RC focuses on building an anti-colonial, anti-racist space and shaping programs that center the most oppressed, working to meet their physical, educational and emotional needs. This is done through programs, trainings, events, and the LGBTQ+ Resource Center in the Student Union.

Mariposas Sin Fronteras - is an organization in Tucson, Arizona led by transgender and LGBTIQ+ immigrants, where leadership is developed and we struggle for a social and political transformation where human, civil, and fundamental rights of the trans-queer community are recognized and respected. Our purpose is to support and defend transgender and LGBTIQ+ people from detention and deportation through moral, legal, and economic support. We are committed to achieving a dignified life for the trans-queer immigrant community where they have access to the necessary resources to survive and succeed in health, mental health, housing, food, education, economic opportunities, coexistence, and community love.
