Compassion for self and others occurs through positive communication. Learn how we can increase our ability to be present in everyday encounters, and open space for compassionate engagement, especially in difficult communication exchanges. Maggie Jane Pitts, Assistant Professor and Director of Graduate Studies, Department of Communication, will introduce the principles of positive communication that enhance and elevate our lived experiences, focusing specifically on savoring communication.

A key question for living a happier existence is 'how to prevent suffering in the face of life's inevitable pain?' Cultivating self-compassion can shape how we respond to life's inherent difficulties and make the most of challenging experiences. Dave Sbarra, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, will share how self-compassion shapes responses to marital separation and divorce, and how this can inform the ways in which we can move through other challenging experiences.

Caregivers include family members, doctors, psychologists, social workers, and chaplains. Fatigue and burnout can hit anyone in a caregiver role who takes on this very important task in the lives of loved ones and patients. Mary-Frances O’Connor, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, will discuss the difficulties faced by caregivers, but more importantly will discuss compassion as the overarching motivation for this difficult work.

The ecological crisis - which includes global warming but is much bigger than that - is the greatest challenge that humanity has ever faced. What does Buddhism offer, if anything, that can help us understand and respond appropriately? And what does the ecological crisis mean for how we understand and practice Buddhism (or follow any spiritual path) today?
